From Historical Silk Fabrics to Their Interactive Virtual Representation and 3D Printing

2020

The documentation, dissemination, and enhancement of Cultural Heritage is of great relevance. To that end, technological tools and interactive solutions (e.g., 3D models) have become increasingly popular. Historical silk fabrics are nearly flat objects, very fragile and with complex internal geometries, related to different weaving techniques and types of yarns. These characteristics make it difficult to properly document them, at the yarn level, with current technologies. In this paper, we bring a new methodology to virtually represent such heritage and produce 3D printouts, also making it highly interactive through the tool Virtual Loom. Our work involves sustainability from different per…

A Multimodal Guide for Virtual 3D Models of Cultural Heritage Artifacts

2008

The area of cultural heritage preservation and fruition has drawn an ever growing attention of artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction research in the last decades. The common aim is to develop systems that can interact with the user in a variety of modes and in the most natural way. In this paper, a multimodal guide for virtual 3D environment navigation is presented. The proposed system integrates X3D environment with a multimodal interface. The application scenario is to provide a visitor assistance and guidance during the visit of one of the halls in the historical Palazzo Steri, the headquarters of the University of Palermo.

AUGMENTED REALITY. PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE.

2013

The access to information is a right and a duty. An accessible website becomes a universal resource for all people who surf the net, it becomes a powerful tool to spread its message and its information with the conscious and the knowledge that the information will come to anyone who wants to access it. The innovative technologies of graphic communication (ICT) are the means to allow this cultural diffusion. In this paper the goal is to demonstrate that a conscious use of ICT allows the accessibility of the cultural heritage. The case study is on the prisons of the Inquisition in Palermo. A great opportunity has permitted to carry out a cultural, historical, architectural and social research…

Mimicking emotions: how 3–12-month-old infants use the facial expressions and eyes of a model

2017

International audience; While there is an extensive literature on the tendency to mimic emotional expressions in adults, it is unclear how this skill emerges and develops over time. Specifically, it is unclear whether infants mimic discrete emotion-related facial actions, whether their facial displays are moderated by contextual cues and whether infants’ emotional mimicry is constrained by developmental changes in the ability to discriminate emotions. We therefore investigate these questions using Baby-FACS to code infants’ facial displays and eye-movement tracking to examine infants’ looking times at facial expressions. Three-, 7-, and 12-month-old participants were exposed to dynamic faci…

New insigths relating to the beginning of the Neolithic in the eastern Spain: Evaluating empirical data and modelled predictions

2018

Abstract In this paper we present recent research concerning the neolithization process in the East of Spain, evaluating the time span between the last hunther-gatherer groups and the first farmers ( c . 5950–5150 cal. BC). To do that we have compiled and filtered current information about radiocarbon dates and sites in order to discuss the state of the art relating to the models used to explain the Neolithic spread in the region. In this sense we compare archaeological data with recent results of virtual model (ABM) in accordance with the scenarios and mechanisms proposed. On this basis we evaluate the empirical data relating to the current model for explaining the Neolithic spread at the …

The reconstruction project: The district Villarosa

2016

The competition for the complex of buildings Ungheria Square, should have sealed the ward accommodati…
